How do I Know if my Jewellery is Marcasite?

How do I Know if my Jewellery is Marcasite? Marcasite is a type of iron sulfide mineral that is often used in jewelry.

It’s a relatively inexpensive stone, but it can be difficult to distinguish from other types of jewellery stones, such as pyrite.  At London Vintage we’ve been using it in our jewelry designs for decades.

Time needed: 10 minutes.

Here are some ways to tell if your jewelry is marcasite:

  1. Look at the colour.

Marcasite can either be a silvery-white or yellowish color, or sometimes brown or black.  Pyrite, on the other hand, is typically a brassy yellow color.

  2. Check the luster.

Marcasite has a metallic luster, while pyrite has a more glassy luster.

  3. Do a streak test.

Rub the stone against a piece of unglazed porcelain.  Marcasite will leave a greenish-black streak, while pyrite will leave a brassy yellow streak.

  4. Look at the setting.

Marcasite is typically set in silver or gold.  Pyrite is often set in base metals, such as brass or copper.

  5. Check for a hallmark.

Some jewelry may be stamped with a hallmark that indicates the metal content.  If the jewelry is stamped with “925,” it is made of sterling silver.  This is a good indication that the jewelry is real marcasite, as marcasite is typically set in silver.

If you are still unsure whether your jewelry is marcasite, you can take it to a jeweller for appraisal. they’ll be able to use their expertise to identify the stone and give you an accurate assessment of its value.

Further Questions You Might Have on Marcasite:

Distinguishing Genuine Marcasite from Imitations:

  • Common Imitations: Imitations of marcasite jewelry can be crafted using various materials such as crystals, rhinestones, or even other metallic compounds like hematite. These imitations often aim to replicate the distinctive sparkle of marcasite but lack its unique properties.
  • Identification Techniques: How do I Know if my Jewellery is Marcasite? Beyond the colour and luster distinctions, genuine marcasite typically exhibits a more subtle and intricate sparkle compared to imitations. Additionally, imitations may lack the characteristic greenish-black streak left by marcasite in a streak test.

Caring for Marcasite Jewelry:

  • Storage Recommendations: To preserve the luster and prevent tarnishing, store marcasite jewelry in a cool, dry place. Use jewelry boxes with individual compartments or soft pouches to minimise contact with air and moisture.
  • Cleaning Guidelines: For routine cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe away dust and debris. In case of tarnishing, create a mild soapy solution using a gentle detergent and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the delicate setting or stones.
  • Preventive Measures: Remove marcasite jewelry before engaging in activities like swimming or cleaning, as exposure to chemicals can compromise its appearance over time.

Maintenance and Professional Cleaning of Marcasite Jewelry:

  • Home Maintenance: Regularly inspect marcasite jewelry for loose stones or signs of wear. Gentle polishing with a jeweler’s cloth can help maintain its shine between professional cleanings.
  • Professional Cleaning Benefits:  Professional cleaning involves the use of specialised techniques to maintain the integrity of the stones and settings, ensuring a thorough and safe cleaning process.
  • Frequency of Professional Cleaning: Professional cleaning could be every 6-12 months, depending on the frequency of wear and exposure. Professional cleaning not only enhances the jewelry’s aesthetic appeal, but also addresses potential issues early on, preventing long-term damage.
